Post-Roe, many women fear that life-saving treatment will not be permitted during pregnancy. However, if a woman’s life becomes endangered, life-saving treatment is allowed to save her life.
What About Pregnancy Complications Like Ectopic Pregnancies and Miscarriages?
Some complications can occur during pregnancy that directly threatens a woman’s life. When these situations do present, life-saving treatment is legally permitted.
A couple of common complications women particularly worry about are miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies.
Miscarriage can sometimes require qualified professionals with medical treatment to intervene to ensure a pregnancy has completely passed and will pose no health risks to a woman’s life.
Ectopic pregnancies are not viable and occur outside the uterus. Once discovered, these pregnancies usually require immediate emergency treatment.
When these or other complications arise, it is legally permissible to treat these conditions to save the woman’s life.
What About in States Where Abortion Is Banned?
After the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v.Wade in June of this year, many questioned if emergency services would be provided in states with abortion bans. The answer is, even in states with complete abortion bans, medical intervention and emergency services are still available and legally permitted to treat pregnancy complications.
Not only do state laws declare this, but the Secretary of Health and Human Services made it known in this letter that life-saving treatments are still readily and legally accessible.
