In Iowa, you have three second-trimester pregnancy options: parenting, adoption, and surgical abortion up until 20 weeks post-fertilization. After 20 weeks, abortion can only be performed in cases of life endangerment.

What Are All of My Pregnancy Options?
Every woman facing pregnancy has three options: abortion, adoption, and parenting. Each one will change your life permanently, so it’s critical to really think about each one and be informed before making your selection.
In the state of Iowa, some abortion options may only be available for a certain period of time due to local laws or FDA approval. For instance, the abortion pill (medical abortion) is only FDA-approved up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. After this window of time, women have to go to a clinic for surgical abortion.
Surgical abortion is only an option up to 20 weeks post-fertilization or 22 weeks after your last menstrual period. If you don’t know how far along you are, you should come to our center to receive a free ultrasound. This will inform you of any health concerns or issues like ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, and tell you your pregnancy’s gestation.
How Much Do These Options Cost?
The cost of any pregnancy option varies. For abortion, the cost depends on many factors, including how far along you are, and the type of procedure you have done. The average cost of abortion at ten weeks is about $500 and increases to $1,195 at twenty weeks. For reference, the second-trimester includes week 13 through week 26.
For parenting, the cost of childbirth can range dramatically depending on the state, any complications, and your insurance coverage. If pregnant and planning to parent, insurance coverage really matters. If you’re below a certain income level, you can apply for Iowa Medicaid, and certain organizations can assist you as well. If you’d like to discuss these costs or any resources, we can help.
For adoption, the adoptive family will pay for many expenses related to childbirth, and sometimes living expenses depending on local laws.
