Many Americans were shocked and confused about the June 2022 Supreme Court ruling and wondered what a post-Roe country would look like. To better understand this decision and how it will impact the U.S., let’s take a look at this ruling and separate fact from fiction.
Fiction: This Verdict Made Abortion Illegal in America
Fact: The overturning of Roe v. Wade did not make abortion illegal everywhere in America. Each state now has the power to make its own abortion laws and restrictions.
When the Supreme Court made its decision, it allowed the people of each state to vote for delegates to speak on their behalf and make laws reflecting their opinions. This means that abortion regulations will vary from state to state.
Fiction: Women Lost Their Voice
Fact: Women have not lost their voice to speak on their beliefs and opinions on this matter. Like other laws and elections, women may have their thoughts heard at the voting booths, electing individuals who speak out and institute laws for them.
What are Iowa’s Abortion Laws?
Iowa does not allow abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. There are also several abortion restrictions currently in place. Some of these include:
- Counseling and a 24-hour waiting period are required.
- An ultrasound is needed to determine fetal age.
- Women must have the opportunity to view the ultrasound.
- Counseling on all available options, including adoption, must be provided.
- Women are advised on all the risks of an abortion procedure.
- Code 2022, Section 135L.3 states that minors must notify parents in advance.
Lastly, as state lawmakers now hold the authority to speak for the people they represent, Iowa lawmakers are working to reinstate a 6-week ban.
